Moving
There’s a quote from Jerry Garcia that’s stuck with me over the years – when talking about his music, he said something to the extent of “I didn’t want to be the best at something, I wanted to be the only person doing it.” I agree. Music moves forward through innovation. But music is also a medium of communication. It should bring people together. There are plenty of musicians who are the only ones doing what they’re doing, but if no one likes it, it’s literally falling on deaf ears. True success in music is unifying innovation and connection. Music that’s not only moving, but moving forward.

I’d say the same is true for art in general.
Oh, and Dan, I’d appreciate it if you’d update your blogroll with my new URL:

True, though it’s not often that I’m moved by modern art.

I think it’s also important to note that Rousseau, believing all languages were corrupt, thought music to be the purest form of communication. No matter how “complex” music may be, its emotions are almost always simple and straight forward.
